Workshop on Saraikela Chhau

A UNIQUE WORKSHOP 10.30 AM- 5 PM Chhau is a UNESCO declared Intangible cultural heritage which represents a form of dance that was developed in the Sangh Deo ruler's dynasty. It is rich and is danced with masks and combines martial arts as well. The word Chhau probably implies Chhaya or shadow. This masked- dance form is a folk classical continuum amalgamated with the martial art tradition of Phari Khanda. Our workshop will explore Phari Khanda along with the usage of the body for Angika Abhinaya with the animal gaits, challis, the use of the Anga Kati, hips, highlighting how movements mentioned in Natyasastra are used in this form. Treatises of performance, suggest that training was largely at the intersection of theory praxis. Based on Acharya parampara the students learnt the concepts of Darshan, Upalabdhi and Jnan, to see, to experience and learn. Natya and yoga are seen as associates, with special reference to asanas and pranayamas stressing that natya, too resides in the consciousness. TALK 6 PM- 7 PM Looking at the Natyasastra with the Prasthantrayee principle of Indian philosophy, that is gnyan achar vichar, theory, analysis and practice in natyaprayoga (praxis of analyzed concepts) methodology, can help us to develop a pedagogy identifying the holistic principles of performance. The talk will also explore some Western concepts of Phenomenological Studies with Rasa Sutra. PRESENTORS Ranga Mandira Academy of World Dance Performance and Indic Studies is a premiere institution for arts.
